When you are homeless, safe and secure housing is priority number one. Pathlight HOME has been pioneering the Housing First model for Central Florida’s homeless for 25 years. If housing is first, what comes second? The answer is—meaningful work. It’s the opportunity get up in the morning with a sense of purpose and dignity and to lie down at night with a feeling of accomplishment and progress. Of course a few dollars in the pocket doesn’t hurt either. Pathlight HOME is launching a Sobik’s Sub Shop and Café in Orlando to provide an on-ramp to employment for those challenged by homelessness and poverty. Participants overcome barriers to employment and enhance skill-sets necessary to succeed on the job.

Sobiks is a sandwich shop and café located next to the Maxwell Garden Apartments on traffic-heavy Orange Blossom Trail. In addition, to an affordable quality eatery, this social enterprise provides a training ground for our trainees in our culinary program to learn customer service skills and put their food service skills to the test in a supportive environment.

Pathlight HOME offers a 12-week culinary training program that provides participants with marketable skills. It also includes ServSafe certification and a banquet set-up/service training. Our classes are small, offering individual coaching, and soft-skill development opportunities critical for work-place success. Our Executive Chef trainer cultivates a network of employers who want to interview and hire our graduates, who in turn command a living wage.

Pathlight HOME is a non-profit agency whose mission is to change the lives’ of Floridians by providing affordable housing and economic opportunity to low income individuals—especially the homeless. Pathlight home has nearly 600 units of affordable housing— the largest provider of permanent housing and supportive services to Central Floridians experiencing homelessness.

“No one in our community hopes to become homeless—we provide permanent housing with supportive services so there is an alternative. Once housing is secured—we help people build resiliency through employment. Our opening of Sobik’s fills that need.” says Pathlight HOME President, Helaine Blum, Esq.
